Group-led volunteering (16+)
Building on the success of our Junior Volunteering programme, and further supporting our #iwill pledge, our Group-Led Volunteering programme offers opportunities for young people aged 16 and over to volunteer as part of a small supervised group.
#iwill is a national initiative that promotes social action, including fundraising campaigning and volunteering, among 10-20 year-olds. The Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to be part of a regional beacon site for #iwill.
About Group-Led Volunteering
Rather than being a structured programme, Group-Led Volunteering offers older groups the chance to define a volunteering project that suits both them and the Trust. Following the principle of shared responsibility established in the Juinor Volunteering programme, Group-Led Volunteers attend in a small group and are fully supervised by qualified adults during one or more trips to our sites, meaning they don’t have to undergo the same level of checks and clearances as individual volunteers of the same age.
As witih the Junior programme, we provide a Designated Lead Person in Charge during group activities and provide a safe environment for volunteers. In return, we ask that Group-Led Volunteers come with their own:
- DBS-checked group leader
- Additional DBS-checked adult supervisor, if possible
- Letter of recommendation from the group leader (one letter may cover all participants)
- Parental consent for all participants under 18
- An Occupational Health declaration for all participants
Groups should normally be between six and ten young adults. We welcome contributions from musical and other artistic groups who can provide suitable entertainment for our service users and visitors.
How to apply
Proposals for Group-Led Volunteering projects should be emailed to Debbie Coates, Volunteer Manager in the first instance. You should have an idea of what you hope to achieve and how long you wish your project to last. Once we have read your proposal and considered how we might be able to support it, we will be in touch with you to discuss a date and to request some additional information.
