Midwife advocates

Our Professional Midwifery Advocates (PMAs) support midwives to develop decision making and coping skills. Our PMAs work directly with our midwives to ensure that they have met their professional development needs and review care for women and babies to ensure a high quality of safe care is provided.

Our PMAs are appointed by the Trust and are experienced, practicing Midwives who have undertaken additional training and are accountable to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The team are also here to support women and their families through their care journey. We aim to ensure that women and families receive guidance and information about getting the right type of care, in the right place by the right professional.

If you feel you need further support and advice about your care or birth choices, we can discuss these with you. You will be able to talk to a Professional Midwifery Advocate in confidence with any issues relating to the care you are receiving.

How Professional Midwifery Advocates can help you:

  • We can support you and your midwife to plan your pregnancy care and plan for the birth of your baby
  • We can discuss with you the most appropriate choices for you and your baby
  • We can talk to you if you are unhappy about your birth outcome or treatment
  • We can listen to any concerns you may have about your maternity care and take action if it is felt to be appropriate.
