Young Persons’ Advisory Group
The Young Persons’ Advisory Group (YPAG) is a youth engagement group at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Founded in 2010, YPAG currently has around 40 active members, who all have a passion for improving their local healthcare services. The group gives young people the chance to share opinions about healthcare both at the hospital and on a national level, to ensure that young people are actively involved in making changes and decisions. They also work alongside the other specialised youth forums across the Trust, including Aspire’s Young Persons’ Development Group and Think4Brum. YPAG has been involved in:
- Delivering presentations
- Interviewing staff
- Quality care walkabouts
- Carrying out consultations
- Taking part in national health participation events
- Securing funding for YPAG T-shirts and badges
- Helping out at fundraising events
YPAG meet every three months at their quarterly meeting, to discuss what has happened over the last quarter and to plan future events. The group also meet regularly for socials, consultations and events.
Who can join?
YPAG welcomes all young people aged 11-19 from across the West Midlands, including hospital patients, siblings and representatives from the local community, who are enthusiastic about improving the services and making the hospital more ‘young-person friendly’.
You do not have to commit to all meetings, but should make as many as you can. If you are coming into hospital for a short stay and want to get involved, do get in touch!
Why get involved?
Working with YPAG provides a great sense of personal reward, by being able to see the change from your involvement over time. It's a great opportunity to meet other young people and learn new skills. Volunteering with YPAG is also a great addition to job/college applications, and will enhance your personal statement for your UCAS application if you want to apply to university.
Want to join or find out more?
If you are between the ages of 11-19 and would like to make a difference to our healthcare services by joining YPAG, please get in touch. If you are a healthcare professional within the trust and would like to meet with the group to help on a project, you can also get in touch:
