Facilities and services

We have a Respiratory and Cystic Fibrosis Unit (RCFU) providing improved access for respiratory and CF patients who need ad-hoc reviews. We also have multi-disciplinary outpatient reviews for complex patients, and overnight cardio-respiratory monitoring. There is a dedicated Ocean Ward facility for patients requiring long-term ventilation - this is a home-from-home environment with a sensory room and family-friendly facilities.

Diagnostic services

Our services include overnight oximetry, overnight sleep studies (cardio-respiratory monitoring), flexible bronchoscopy, specialist lung function tests (most of which are not performed elsewhere in the region), assessment/monitoring for non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and invasive ventilation, and allergy skin tests.

One-Stop Asthma Clinic

We are now offering children living within the Washwood Heath area access to our One-Stop Asthma Clinic.

This is based at Washwood Heath Health and Wellbeing Centre, in East Birmingham.

Your GP can refer your child into the clinic if they have the following symptoms:

  • ongoing wheeziness
  • tightness around the chest
  • a cough lasting more than eight weeks
  • breathlessness lasting longer than six weeks
  • chest infections.

They may:

  • have suspected asthma
  • have been diagnosed with asthma but need more investigations
  • have undiagnosed asthma

The benefits of this service are:

  • a quicker diagnosis
  • a treatment plan given on the day
  • less trips to the doctor
