A Day in the Life of Abdul Muhit, Domestics – Birmingham Children’s Hospital Facilities
What is your team’s name and role within the team?
I have been a member of the domestic team since March 2010. We keep the hospital environment clean and tidy. There are about 80 of us in total. I am a member of the morning team where I cover Ward 9 but I also do overtime shifts with the evening team where I mostly cover Ward 9 and NSW but I can be found in many different areas of the hospital.
How would you describe a typical day/ shift?
On the whole, I am kept incredibly busy. My shift usually starts at 8.30am with me removing all the overnight rubbish form the ward, then I clean the staff areas of the ward ready for the staff breaks. After this I usually start cleaning the ward ready for new patients, visitors and clinical staff. Then I move onto the bed areas, the corridors, the toilets and the bathrooms, cleaning everything from top to bottom. Once a week we conduct what we call a “pull-out” which involves pulling out all beds and other pieces of furniture in conjunction with the ward staff and housekeepers and having a really deep-clean of the ward. I will also buff the corridors with an industrial cleaner once a week and get the bathroom and toilet floors scrubbed with a machine once a fortnight.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
It is a source of great pride for me that I am responsible for keeping the patients’ environment clean, tidy and sterile. Cleanliness is so important for the successful recovery of our patients.
What achievement are you most proud of?
Seeing patients getting well and going home always gives me a great sense of achievement. I am a father myself, so I know how important it is getting the very best care for our children in a pleasant and well cared for environment.
Not a lot of people know this but……
My children have both become keen gardeners. My daughter has become incredibly keen on growing beautiful flowers for our garden and she has had me landscaping our garden at home in my limited free time.
