A Day in the Life of Jaswindro Shergill, BCH Facilities Supervisor

Jaswindro Shergill Facilities SupervisorFor this year’s National Estates and Facilities Day, to highlight some of the roles that colleagues in our Vital Services perform each day, we spoke with members of the Facilities Team at our Children’s Hospital to get an insight into their work.

Meet Jaswindro Shergill, Facilities Supervisor.

What is your job title, team name and role within the team?

My name is Jaswindro Shergill, my role is that of a supervisor in the Facilities department at our Children’s Hospital. I have been in this role for the past five years but been with the Trust since 1999.

In that time, I have gained a lot of knowledge in people management, understanding the infection control and prevention techniques around cleaning and our patients, plus the ability to manage and supervise a team to meet service demands.

How would you describe a typical day/ shift?

A typical day in the Facilities department is a rollercoaster of emotions, I manage a large group of individuals that come from different ethnic background and orientation. I am a very confident and calm individual; I try to plan my day and carefully follow set out plans. I try as much as possible not to stress on issues I can’t control because I’ve learnt it doesn’t change a thing. Sometimes it’s hard with individuals but from my training, I try to resolve conflicts to the best of my abilities.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy everything about my job – I like being happy and try to be positive in my approach to life. I like that my role keeps me busy and always on my toes. The staff and colleagues are like a family to me, I enjoy sharing my time and experiences with them.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I never envisaged being a supervisor, I started working for this Trust through an agency then applied for a permanent role when the opportunity came along. Luckily, I was successful in the interview and I have grown and progressed a lot since that time.

I have learnt and gained transferable skills that has helped me in my day-to-day life as a supervisor. Also, I have the support of my colleagues and my line managers which is helpful in a fast-paced organisation like ours. I have gained some certification in my time here, from management courses, train the trainer qualification to IPC training which is beneficial in my current role.

Not a lot of people know this but ……

I am a religious person and a strong believer of my faith.
