A Day in the Life of Jayden Hughes, Estates Assistant – Birmingham Children’s Hospital Estates

Jayden Hughes Estates What is your job title, team and role within the team?

I work for the Estates Department at the Children’s Hospital for Vital Services. I am an Estates Assistant for the team and I can work across both sites. My team consists of around 50 people across both sites. My role consists of assisting the team with any reactive or PPM works that may be logged via tabs. I also do daily and weekly water flushing to help prevent contamination in the pipework.

How would you describe a typical day/ shift?

A typical working day for me begins at 8am and finishes at 4pm. No day is the same, however each day is filled with helping and learning within the team with various jobs around the hospital. This could be any reactive works such as leaks and repairs or Pre Planned Maintenance on equipment.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

The team chemistry. We are a team and we have one goal to achieve and that’s maintaining a safe environment for the staff, patients and visitors. With that goal in mind everyone gets on with each other and helps wherever possible.

What achievement are you most proud of?

The fact that we get all the jobs done most of the time on time and we can look back at our work and see how it positively helped the wider Trust.

Not a lot of people know this but……

The work I do (water flushing) personally helps the hospital to keeps diseases and virus’s such as legionella and pseudomonas out of the pipework.
