International Women in Engineering Day 2023 - Hayley Lennon, Senior Administrator (Energy)

Hayley Lennon About you….

I am currently studying Building Services Engineering HNC at South & City College, Birmingham whilst working within the Sustainability Team for the Trust. I started at BWC in June 2003 as part of the Housekeeping Team and have slowly progressed to the position I hold now in Estates as Senior Energy Administrator.

Being a woman in engineering….

My role as Office Manager in our Women’s Hospital Estates Department was my induction into the field of engineering. Stereotypically a male dominated environment, I was welcomed into Estates by all. After finding my feet and gaining confidence, I have been actively encouraged by team leaders and management to peruse and engage in areas of interest to me, I have chosen sustainability.

In the past two years, I have completed many courses and training sessions that I have found to be both interesting and beneficial. I can honestly say that I feel part of a team and I am involved, where necessary, in many facets of day-to-day operations.

What advice would you give to women considering a career in STEM?

My advice to women considering a career in STEM would be go for it. Sometimes I can feel slightly apprehensive but that is only because I am still learning and progressing. Be confident and find the area of interest that is for you. Go on all the courses and training sessions offered to you as they will enable you to establish what you do and don’t like.

This time next year it could be you celebrating INWED.
