International Women in Engineering Day 2023 – Scarlett Healey, Graduate Sustainability Officer

Scarlett Healey About you….

I am currently studying Air Pollution Management and Control MSc at the University of Birmingham while working with as part of the BWC Sustainability Team. I started working at the Trust in November 2021.

Being a woman in engineering….

My first experience in the engineering sector was a placement at BWC during my undergraduate studies, where I analysed energy use and building management system (BMS) data. I had very little prior knowledge of BMS or energy management and was pretty much oblivious to the challenges facing women in engineering roles.

However, my experience at BWC was an overwhelmingly positive one. I received support from the Estates team on my project and everyone was more than happy to help. I’ve continued to feel this support in my role on the Sustainability Team. I understand this isn’t always the case, but I believe there is positive change happening in the engineering sector and hope to encourage other women to follow a career in STEM.

What advice would you give to women considering a career in STEM?

My advice to women considering a career in STEM would be to push yourself out of your comfort zone and be confident in your knowledge and abilities. It’s easy to feel inexperienced or out of place in a male dominated industry but you should never doubt yourself.

Fun fact….

I can play the guitar up to grade 8.
