Together we care and remember
The loss of a baby or child is a deeply sad and upsetting time.
We are a team of bereavement specialists here to support you and your family through this difficult time. For many families, this is the first experience of bereavement so we are here with emotional and practical support to help you.
We hope that the information gathered here is a gentle support.
We work closely with our Chaplaincy team. Find out more about our Chaplaincy bereavement support.
Care at Birmingham Children’s Hospital
If we’ve missed you whilst you were in hospital, then please contact us so we can have a conversation about the support you may need.
Making memories with your child is an experience to cherish when time together has been so short. We can help with photographs, with memory bags and memory boxes that hold special things for you from your beloved child.
We can organise support from the multi-faith Chaplaincy, and can also provide a blessing or naming ceremony for your child.
The Rainbow Room is a quiet family room where you may choose to spend time with your child after leaving the ward.
We can help guide you with the practicalities such as certificates, registration and funeral arrangements.
We can help to explain the need for any further investigations needed. We will facilitate a meeting with a member of your child’s medical team to provide you the chance to talk about your child’s health experience and ask questions.
Magnolia House is our home for palliative and bereavement support. This is a quiet space in the Matron’s garden where we can sensitively support you through important conversations and provide you time and space to reflect. Families have told us that it is sometimes difficult to return to the hospital. Magnolia House provides an alternative place to meet with us if needed.
We have a remembrance book, where you can choose to make a personal entry for your child.
We have two remembrance services each year where everyone is welcome.
In the springtime, we have a service held at St. Chad’s cathedral for families remembering their children, and in the autumn there is a memorial walk and picnic at the arboretum in Lichfield bringing families together in nature to share an experience of remembering their children.
