Burns Centre

Burns Centre

Our Burns Centre is known for its excellent care, expert staff, and superb facilities. It treats children and young people who have suffered from minor to serious burn injuries.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) Burns Centre operates as a burn facility, unit and centre for the West Midlands, and is the Centre for the East Midlands. It is also part of the Midlands Burn Care Network (MBCN) and therefore receives referrals from all over the country.

We also get referrals and transfers of international patients and we are an EBA (European Burn Association) verified Burn Centre

In strict collaboration with other specialities in the Children’s Hospital, the Burns Centre also provides treatments for paediatric skin conditions that have characteristics and symptoms similar to burns such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), necrotizing fasciitis and purpura fulminans.

Location

Our Burns Centre is located on the first floor of our Children’s hospital.

Our Team

Our nurses and doctors will explain every step of your child’s treatment and work with you to figure out the best course of action.

There are many other people working at our Burns Centre, including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, play specialists, psychologists, dieticians and many others.

Facilities

Everything needed to treat a burn injury is located within the centre and there is also an outpatient area for children with minor injuries or who have been sent home but may need to return to have their dressings changed. This is also where you would see your consultant after your child has been discharged.

We have our own operating theatre, a high-dependency unit for patients who need constant care from a nurse, an adolescent room where young people can relax and a playroom full of toys for our younger children.

There are also two assessment rooms, where injuries are assessed or dressings are changed. One room contains a special machine called a Laser Doppler. This measures how deeply the burn has penetrated the skin by placing a camera over the burn.

Research

Our Burns Team strongly believe that research helps find cures and better treatments for our children and families now and in the future. As our hospital vision, we want to guarantee that every child, young person, and family who comes into contact with our services can be offered the opportunity to participate in a research project that is appropriate to them.

Our Burns Team is involved in several research trials, both internal, national, and international.
