A child using our VR headset while receiving laser treatment

Recent advances in optical technologies have produced various laser systems capable of revising scars to improve their appearance, improving the appearance of vascular conditions and reducing unwanted hair growth.

For small areas to treat with Laser, a numbing cream can be used (referred to as ‘local anaesthesia, LA), mostly for kids over 10 years old. For younger kids or bigger areas, they might need to be put to sleep (referred to as ‘ General Anaesthesia, GA) so the doctor can treat a larger area. Sometimes, other treatments, like steroid injections or surgery into the scar, are done while your child is asleep, so they don’t have to go back to the hospital many times.

Virtual Reality in Laser Treatment

Virtual Reality (VR) is another tool we can use to reduce anxieties and fears around the treatment, by encouraging relaxation and distraction. This supports the reduction or requirement for the use of general anaesthetic or sedation. The VR headsets immerse patients in digitally created 3D environments, from relaxing beaches to wild safari adventures.
