Dietetics

Our dynamic team of paediatric dietitians work closely with clinicians in all medical and surgical specialties across the Children's hospital, advising on therapeutic diets or nutritional support for our inpatients. We also attend multidisciplinary clinics with specialist teams and run busy dietetic-led outpatient clinics daily for children and young people, accepting referrals from Children’s Hospital consultants and GPs across Birmingham.

We have a strong research and development team working within our inherited metabolic disorders team, devising new dietetic treatments and clinical feeds for very rare conditions. They also manage the largest number of children on ketogenic diets for the management of epilepsy in the UK.

The team

Our team is made up of 30 paediatric dietitians, some of who are nationally and internationally renowned for the work they do within their specialist areas, lecturing and teaching, contributing to nutrition publications and national and international guidelines.

We have specialist dietetic teams working in Inherited Metabolic Disorders, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Hepatology, Small Bowel Transplantation, Cardiology, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Ketogenic diets, Cystic Fibrosis, Cancer, Diabetes, Eating Disorders and Food Allergy.

We work with all members of the multidisciplinary team to provide holistic care for our patients.

We also work closely with our special feed unit, a dedicated team who prepare daily specialist feeds for our inpatients, under stringent safety and hygiene conditions. This small team prepare around 150 feeds or around 600 individual bottles of feeds daily for our inpatients.

Opening hours

Our core hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm.

We are available for emergency work on Saturdays, 9.30am–12.30pm

We have a 24-hour on-call service available via switchboard for all urgent out-of-hours issues.

Location and facilities

The department offices are located in Ladywood House, our outpatient clinic is in Main Outpatients, and the Special Feed Unit is in the basement of the Children's hospital.
