Dr Jan Idkowiak
Honorary Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist, Clinical Associate Professor in Paediatric Endocrinology Programme Director, NIHR Birmingham Clinical Research Facility (Paediatrics).
Jan is an Honorary Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist and has worked at the trust for 10 years.
He qualified in Medicine from the University of Halle-Wittenberg in Germany in 2005 and achieved his master's degree in 2007. He completed clinical training at the University of Dresden’s Children’s Hospital and was awarded his PhD in 2015 after completing a research fellowship at the University of Birmingham.
Jan was appointed as an NIHR-funded Clinical Lecturer in 2015 and a Clinical Associate Professor in 2022. He is also Programme Director of the Birmingham NIHR/ Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (Paediatrics) at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
His main research focuses on how the body produces and processes hormones. He studies how children and young people develop complications from hormone conditions, such as early hormone development or Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) - previously known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). He also researches rare genetic hormone disorders and paediatric adrenocortical tumours.
He combines clinical and laboratory work to improve our understanding of hormones in the body.
