A Celebration of Growth and Connection: By Your Side Mentorship Graduation

Last week, mentors and mentees gathered to mark the successful completion of the fourth cohort of By Your Side, the Trust’s flagship mentoring programme.
Designed to foster connection, growth, and career development across the organisation, By Your Side pairs staff from different departments and backgrounds, encouraging the exchange of ideas, experiences, and support. The initiative aims to break down barriers to leadership and progression, offering a safe and inclusive space for staff to ask questions, gain confidence, and build meaningful relationships.
The heart of By Your Side lies in its commitment to empowering staff at all levels, particularly those from our underrepresented groups. Whether transitioning into a new role or seeking guidance on the next step in their career, mentees are matched with experienced colleagues who offer insight, encouragement, and practical advice.
“It’s about giving people someone they can turn to,” said Darren Lamb, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and programme lead. “Someone they can ask the questions they might otherwise be too embarrassed to ask. It’s about feeling heard, supported, and not alone.”
Mentors volunteer their time and expertise, and Darren is always available to provide guidance and support to ensure mentors feel equipped to help their mentees thrive.
The graduation event was more than just a celebration, it was a moment of reflection. Graduates shared stories of personal growth, newfound confidence, and the valuable lessons they learned through the programme. Many spoke about how the mentorship helped them navigate challenges, build networks, and feel more prepared for future opportunities. Millie Fage, Complex Care Team Leader said “I had someone who gave me the confidence to say ‘Why not me?’ through my imposter syndrome”
And the feedback speaks volumes, 100% of mentors and mentees said they would recommend the programme to others, underscoring its value and impact across the Trust.
The event also served as a vibrant networking opportunity, allowing mentees to connect with other mentors and continue building relationships beyond the programme’s formal structure.
As By Your Side continues to grow, its impact is clear: fostering a culture of openness, support, and development across Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Hospital. With each cohort, the Trust moves closer to its goal of creating an environment where every staff member feels empowered to lead, grow, and succeed.
Interested staff are encouraged to volunteer as mentors or mentees and become part of a programme that’s changing lives, one conversation at a time.
