A Few Minutes With…Sharon Shuker, Medical Secretary in our Cardiology Service

Sharon Shuker

We spent a few minutes with Sharon Shuker, Medical Secretary in our Cardiology Service, to find out more about her role.

In a nutshell, explain what your job entails.

As a medical secretary, my role is all about helping our consultants provide the best care for our heart patients. I work with colleagues throughout the hospital and speak to patients daily, managing appointments and prescription requests. I’ve worked in Cardiology for over 22 years, so some of our patients know me very well. I’ve known them most of their childhood.

What achievement are you most proud of (so far)?

I’m most proud of being able to help our consultants care for these poorly children. Every day, we’re trying to do the very best for our patients, and I’m really proud of that.

Why did you choose your career?

There’s something that just pulls you to the NHS and wanting to help people. I wanted to give back to the NHS and help care for others.

Who would you say was your inspiration?

Our patients are my inspiration. What they go through on a daily basis - some of them are very poorly and being able to part of their journey to getting better is a privilege.

If there was one thing you could change in the world, what would it be?

I wish there was peace in the world and all children were safe from war.

Describe yourself in three words.

I don’t like to talk about myself much, but I think my colleagues would say I am friendly and hard-working. When I work from home, my husband always says I’m very good at my job, which is really touching to hear.

Finally, not a lot of people know this about me but…

I love charity shops and getting bargains!  love to do this with my sisters, Michelle and Louise.
