Birmingham Children’s Hospital superstars take coveted title for 24th time running at British Transplant Games

It was worth the wait. After a break since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Team BCH superstars have enjoyed a golden British Transplant Games and have left Leeds with the Best Children’s Team title for an amazing 24th year running.
Our team of more than 30, who were kindly supported by our charity as always, were back together and performed magnificently at the event that celebrates the power of organ donation.
All of our athletes have undergone life-saving transplantation procedures at our hospital and they joined more than 800 other young people and adults from across the country who have all been given the Gift of Life.
Over the four days of competition (28 – 31 July) our team competed in a host of sports including athletics, swimming, tennis, golf and many more. They have left Yorkshire with a stunning 66 medals, including 25 golds, as well as the Best Liver Team title.
As always, the main message behind the event was to celebrate and champion organ donation; not only asking people to think about registering but also, importantly, sharing their wishes with their loved ones.
Sara Clarke, Transplant Games Team Manager and Lead Neonatal Dietitian, said: “It’s always special but after having to wait so long to finally get back together, this year’s seem to have an extra sparkle.
“The atmosphere has been fantastic. I’ve been lucky enough now to be involved with the games and our team for 20 years. It’s a true privilege and seeing our superstars grow up, particularly after the break this time around, really hits home just how powerful organ donation is.
“You cannot describe the difference it makes. We know families face such a difficult decision when they lose a loved one, which is why we’re so incredibly grateful to them when they give so selflessly to agree to offer the Gift of Life to another in need of help.
“This year’s games have shared that message loudly one again.”
For the volunteer management team made up of staff from the Children’s Hospital, there will now be a few weeks rest until preparations start for next year’s event in Coventry.
