Birmingham Women and Children’s asks patients and families to send their Moments of Magic

The Spirit Awards winners gather on stage Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (BWC) is looking for patients and families to come forward with their ‘Moments of Magic’ about the staff that cared for them so they can be nominated for this year’s BWC Spirit Awards.

The awards, held every year, recognise individuals and teams from across the specialist Trust, who have achieved amazing things or have gone above and beyond to support those they care for.

The Moment of Magic prize is usually hotly contested and is the one category that nominated exclusively by patients and families, with the winner chosen by the public.

Parents, Abigail and Matthew, nominated last year’s winner, Mental Health worker Nicki Twigg, because of kindness and compassion she showed their two children who have complex mental health needs

They said: “We could never thank Nicki enough for the support she continues to give our family with warmth, friendliness and professionalism. In times of acute crisis, all we need to do is put out a plea for help, and Nicki will arrange to meet us as soon as she can, often outside of normal working hours - such is her dedication.

“Nothing is ever too much trouble and she somehow knows how to connect with the boys no matter what state of mind they are in.”

Nicki said: “I was very shocked. I honestly did not expect to win at all. Watching the video where the family and boys spoke about me was incredibly emotional. Seeing the reactions of my husbands, friends and colleagues as well as the people who nominated me as my name was read out will always stay with me.

“I felt so honoured the family had taken the time to nominate me and to hear how much my work had impacted them as a family as well as the life of my patients. I can honestly say that the nomination and awards were an absolute highlight of my career and I will treasure the whole experience.”

Daljit Athwal, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, said: “Our BWC Spirit Awards mean a huge amount to our staff. To be recognised for the incredible and compassionate work that they do by those they help is special.

“If you know someone who is deserving, please do nominate them for the Moment of Magic award. It has a hugely positive impact for those receiving recognition.”

Patients and families have until this Wednesday (10 July) at 5pm. To nominate go to https://bwc.nhs.uk/bwc-spirit-awards/ and nominate in the ‘Moment of Magic’ category.
