Cervical Cancer Awareness Month – Empowering women to continue to attend their appointments

For Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, we spoke with our Clinical Lead for our Colposcopy and Vulval services, consultant and gynaecologist, Jennifer Byrom who shares her thoughts on the importance of attending your appointments and valuing your cervical health.

By attending all your appointments, our Women’s Hospital Colposcopy clinicians can provide you with a quicker diagnosis to prevent conditions such as cervical cancer from worsening or becoming unmanageable. 1 in 142 UK women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer in their life time, and 99.8% of cases are preventable if you seek medical support.

Our Colposcopy services are often used by women following their smear test to better monitor cell changes and abnormalities before further treatment. Our multi-disciplinary team is made up of gynaecologists, clinical specialists, nurses, health care assistants, receptionists, data input clerk and secretaries; seeing over 1,200 new patients a year, as well as around 750 women attending follow-ups or undergoing further treatment.

Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Jennifer Byrom said: “Cervical Cancer Awareness is a time to empower women to value their cervical health and ensure that they are attending their appointments to receive the best possible outcomes. Colposcopy appointments are going unattended and we want to change this - your cervical health matters. Cervical Cancer Awareness Week is an important time to highlight the support that you can receive to ensure you are cared for.”

We’d like to encourage women to continue attending their follow-up appointments and monitoring their cervical health to reduce complications and ensure they are taken care of by our dedicated team of Colposcopy experts. You can also book your general screening through your GP before visiting our services.
