Clinical Nurse Manager, Donna, recognised for her compassionate care

A group of nurses and midwives standing smiling at the camera with a DAISY award trolley Donna Lee-Sharpe, Clinical Nurse Manager at our Women’s Hospital, was recently recognised and given a highly coveted DAISY Award.

Donna was nominated by a family who had previously suffered an ectopic pregnancy.

The family said in their nomination: “I recently visited the EPAU for an early pregnancy scan because my last pregnancy was an ectopic and resulted in a rupture.

“The bereavement team set up a meeting with Donna and I explained to her what had happened during my whole hospital stay, not just in the EPAU. Donna took my concerns really seriously. She made me feel heard and that my experiences were valid.

“When I saw Donna recently at the early pregnancy scan, she took the time to discuss the situation with my husband and again in private.

“I felt as though, even though what had happened was awful, the fact that she had taken it so seriously and dealt with it in such a professional and respectful way gave me such relief.

“Although it wasn't easy to have that meeting, I'm so glad I did now. I'm really grateful to Donna for making me feel like my experience mattered.”

Donna was surprised on the Unit and presented with the award by Louisa Davidson, Director of Midwifery and Daljit Athwal, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, where she received a certificate and ‘Healer’s Touch’ statue, a DAISY pin and cinnamon rolls for her colleagues.

Donna shared: ‘I was completely taken by surprise by the award and deeply humbled to have been nominated.

“Meeting with the family was something I was more than willing to do. I could only imagine how difficult it must have been for them to return to the hospital after experiencing such a traumatic loss.

“My only intention was to offer whatever support I could to help ease their pain, even just a little. It’s something I would do without hesitation for any of my patients.

Donna added: “I was truly grateful to the family for feeling able to share their concerns with me. While I couldn’t change what they had been through, their openness helped us take steps that I hope will improve the experience for others in the future.

“Reading their nominations, knowing that I was able to make even a small difference during such a difficult time, means more than I can say. This recognition is not just for me, it is a reflection of the strength of the families we care for and the importance of listening with compassion.”

Congratulations Donna.
