Coming home... Former nurses visit Birmingham Children’s Hospital site

A group of former nursing students and lecturers who trained at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and had placements both at the Children’s Hospital when it was the Old General Hospital and at the Five Ways site, came back to visit.
The group took part in a tour of the wards, met some current staff and were given a warm welcome with a talk and some refreshments.
Natalie Halford, Associate Director of Nursing, said: “Meeting nurses that had worked here so many years ago hearing their stories and their passion for children’s nursing at Birmingham Children’s Hospital further cemented the reason why we are so proud to be nurses at BWC.
“The stories they shared were so lovely to hear, we had a bit of a giggle about how it was then and how it compares to now. It’s true to say that our values were very aligned.”
The welcome talk allowed the group to see through a short presentation where the Trust is as reorganisation in 2024 and how far all our sites have come with regards to what we offer and what equipment and facilities we have to support our women, children, young people and families.
Natalie said: “We are already thinking about how we could invite them back to speak to a larger group, experience is everything in nursing and sharing stories is a great way of learning.”
Some nurses came from across the country to visit the hospital and see what it looks like now. The group then explored Birmingham’s restaurant scene after spending some time with current staff and nurses at the hospital.
