Donating breast milk nationwide - Kayleigh from Kidderminster shares "It’s a really rewarding thing to do and I’m quite proud”

Two months following the birth of her youngest Kayleigh Nortonboy Rowan, Kayleigh mum of two from Kidderminster, decided to donate her breast milk to our Women’s Hospital Milk Bank which provides breast milk for infants that stay with us across our Neonatal services who’s mothers may struggling to provide, sometimes due to geographical separation or maternal illness.

Breast milk, due to its unique composition and anti-infective properties, helps sick and premature babies to build strength and even though some women at our Neonatal units can provide their own breast milk, complications can arise making this difficult for mothers to breast feed.

Our milk bank received 7,870 litres of milk last year, donated by 138 different donors, with 6,570 litres of this milk being distributed to many neonatal units across the UK. Kayleigh who is one of our 138 donors stepped forward to shine a light on the process of donation, the sense of reward that accompanies this and how proud she was to become a breast milk donor.

The 28-year-old mum shared: “I thought it would be a nice idea to donate, I already had an extra supply after Rowan was born. It was an easy process – the hospital would send bottles through the post and delivery drivers would drive to me to collect them.

“Last month I donated 18 litres, so pretty much 9 litres every fortnight to help babies across the UK’s Neonatal units and I still had enough for my little ones.

“All you need is a clear blood test, no tattoosmilk map within the last 12 months, no drinking or smoking and you’re all set to donate! It’s a really rewarding thing to do and I’m quite proud.”

We’d like to say a big thank you to Kayleigh and all our other 137 generous donors at our Women’s Hospital Milk Bank; we’re proud to see our new mums going above and beyond, not only for their own children but for our sick and premature babies across the UK’s Neonatal units.
