Dr Jim Gray receives the Lifetime Achievement prize at the BWC Spirit Awards 2021

Dr Jim Gray holding his award A Consultant Microbiologist who has dedicated more than 25 years to the care and treatment of patients in Birmingham has been honoured by the Trust with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr Jim Gray has worked at our Trust since 1995 and was celebrated for his sterling work caring for children, young people, women and their families at our prestigious BWC Spirit Awards.

Dr Gray has been at the forefront of the Trust’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past 18 months and has become a fantastic ambassador for the Trust and a trusted colleague to many.

"I'm so proud of what my team and I have achieved in the last 18 months," he said. "Together, we managed to deliver one of the best COVID testing services in the country.

"The team worked incredibly hard. In the beginning, it was challenging; there was a lot of uncertainty. We couldn't talk to or comfort patients face to face like we used to and hearing how unwell COVID patients sounded over the phone was frightening.

"We worked hard to deliver quick and effective COVID testing, often coming in at 6:30am in the morning to collect test results. I wanted staff to know their results as soon as possible, not only to put their minds at ease, but so staff could return to work to provide essential care for our patients.

"It was a challenging time, but it really brought out the best in people. I have worked for the Trust for a long time, and I'm as proud to work for it now as I am when I first started. There's an incredible sense of community here; we all know and go out of our way to help one another."

Dr Gray career at BWC has seen a number of notable achievements, from working with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to create Neonatal Infection Guidelines, reducing the number of babies unnecessarily treated with antibiotics, to establishing a national safety guideline for donor breast milk.

On talking about receiving the Lifetime Achievement award, Dr Gray added: "I was very surprised and honoured. I still feel a sense of shock. Hearing what all those who nominated me had to say made me feel very proud. There are so many amazing people who could have been nominated, so it's a real privilege to be chosen to receive this award.”
