Helping out asthma patients in the community – World Asthma Day

Asthma Specialist Nurse Teresa At Birmingham Women’s and Children’s, we have a specialist asthma team that work in our hospitals and across the community in GP surgeries and centres to help advise and treat young people living with the condition.

In fact, today, on World Asthma Day (2 May), there was a clinic at Washwood Health in Saltley, run by Teresa Evans, our Asthma Nurse Specialist, which started in March 2022, as well as clinics in Erdington, Sutton Coldfield and West Birmingham.

Dr Satish Rao, Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician, said: “More than 400 children, young people and families have benefitted from this service, which has improved asthma care and outcomes for vast majority of the patients.

“This local and integrated service has been widely appreciated. We have received lots of positive pieces of feedback and have had many reports of improved confidence in managing their child’s asthma.

“In addition, the locality asthma clinics are also supporting through the Asthma Friendly School programme. This involves helping schools in having right policies, training for staff in identifying and keeping children with asthma safe at school.”

Some of the feedback received includes: “This appointment has helped me understand a lot more in managing her asthma, really happy with it.”

Another added: “This is definitely a brilliant service especially for those who are new to Asthma issues.”

The project is being led by BWC and is funded and run by Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care System.
