Inspirational midwife awarded prestigious national honour

Dudu's silver award An innovative midwife whose commitment to improving care for women and babies has been awarded a prestigious national accolade.

Dudu Nyathi, who works as Fetal Monitoring and Surveillance Midwife at our Women’s Hospital, has been presented with a Silver Award from the Deputy Chief Midwifery Officer for England, Sascha Wells-Munro OBE, as part of a visit to our maternity unit on Tuesday (1 November).

The award is presented to teams or individuals who have demonstrated performance which is deemed to have gone above and beyond the expectations of their everyday role. Dudu, who won a BWC Spirit Award for Service Improvement in 2021, has pioneered an approach to fetal monitoring which has led to a reduction in babies requiring neonatal care following their birth.

By reduction neonatal admissions, Dudu’s work has ensured that newborns can remain with their parents following birth, rather than be cared for in hospital, which in turn reduces incidences of post-natal depression as well as increased breastfeeding rates.

Rachel Carter, Director of Midwifery and Deputy Chief Nurse (Women’s) said: “Dudu is an incredible asset to our women, babies and families, as well as her colleagues, for the work she does and I’m absolutely delighted that she has been awarded this prestigious honour.

“She has completely changed the way we view fetal monitoring and that has meant better outcomes for babies and their families. She is a credit to our hospital and to herself and she fully deserves this award.”

Dudu was presented her Silver Award as part of a visit to our Women’s Hospital. Sascha Wells-Munro was joined by Janet Driver, Regional Chief Midwife for NHS England in the Midlands, and Wendy Olayiwola, National Maternity Lead for Equality at NHS England to take a tour of our maternity unit, including triage and delivery suite.

This was following by an informal discussion with Chief Executive, Sarah-Jane Marsh CBE, and a number of midwifery and neonatal colleagues, where they were updated on achievements and innovations which are currently in place at our hospital.
