Inspirational Sarah recognised in O2’s Everyday Hero Awards

We couldn’t be more proud of our colleague and friend, Sarah Dodwell, who epitomises our Trust values of being ambitious, brave and compassionate in everything we do. Sarah, has recently been highly commended in O2’s Everyday Hero Awards after being nominated by her husband, Chris, for her work during COVID-19 whilst she faced her own tremendous personal challenge.

Sarah, our Organisational Development and Human Resources Manager, has worked at BWC for 11 years. In 2017, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent treatment and successfully recovered however, last year, a routine scan detected her cancer had returned , spread to her pelvis and diagnosed as being stage four – meaning, heartbreakingly, it cannot be cured.

Despite this devastating news, Sarah has refused to let this stop her. Her dedication and commitment to supporting our teams, which in turn offer the very best care to our women, children and families, has shone through.

Sarah has continued to work during her treatment. Like others, she was required to shield during the lockdown. It may have been another obstacle, but it was another Sarah overcame – working from home throughout the recent months. Something that, despite being more challenging, she has enjoyed as it’s presented an opportunity to connect with more colleagues virtually.

Sarah, who joined our Children’s Hospital as a HR Assistant, deservedly won an iPhone 11 courtesy of her hard work and recognition with the O2 Awards.

Sarah said, "I’m incredibly proud and humbled to have been nominated and highly commended at the O2 Everyday Hero awards. Every day I feel privileged to work with such talented and passionate colleagues who really put our women, children, young people and families at the heart of everything they do.

"To me, they are the real heroes; I’m just honoured to play my small part in making BWC a fantastic organisation providing amazing care for those who need it the most."

Everyone at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is immensely proud. Well done Sarah. You are an inspiration.
