Latest Care Quality Commission report for our Trust

The fronts of the Women's Hospital on top and Children's Hospital below The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published its report into our Trust following an inspection of services, which took place between June and October 2022.

The inspection team visited services within the Children’s Hospital and also inspected our community and inpatient mental health services. Services within the Women’s Hospital were not re-inspected as part of this visit.

Our Children’s Hospital has retained its overall rating of ‘Outstanding’ and services within our Women’s Hospital continue to be rated as ‘Good’.

The Trust is disappointed by the inspection findings within our Mental Health Service, which has now been rated as ‘Inadequate’.

This has resulted in an overall Trust Wide rating of ‘Requires Improvement’ for the organisation when the ratings are combined.

Our Trust Board has fully accepted both the findings and improvement actions that have been set out by the inspection team, specifically in relation to our mental health services.

Following the inspection, we have continued to work very closely with the CQC team, addressing the urgent concerns highlighted immediately following their initial inspection feedback, and establishing a clear improvement programme for addressing all remaining areas.

Positively, the CQC inspection team highlighted several areas of good and outstanding practice across the whole organisation and within some of the individual service areas reviewed. Specifically, the organisation was recognised and praised for:

  • Having an open culture where patients, their families and staff could raise concerns without fear.
  • Having leaders and staff that actively and openly engaged with patients, staff, equality groups, the public and local organisations to help improve services for patients.
  • The compassion, kindness and support demonstrated for patients.
  • Having a clear vision and strategy.
  • The level organisational and individual commitment to continual service improvement.
  • The clear commitment to innovation and research.

Matt Boazman, the Trust’s Interim Chief Executive, said: “Whilst we are delighted that the Children’s Hospital has retained its overall rating of ‘Outstanding’ following the re-inspection, and services within our Women’s Hospital continue to be rated as ‘Good’, we are of course disappointed by the inspection findings within our Mental Health Service, which has now been rated as ‘Inadequate’ overall.

“As a Trust Board we fully accept both the findings and improvement actions that have been set out by the inspection team, specifically in relation to our mental health services. We immediately addressed urgent concerns and have put in place a clear improvement programme to address all remaining areas.

“We are fully committed to addressing all of the issues identified by the inspection team and have continued to invest heavily in our mental health services over the last twelve months in order to address concerns with waiting times, establish a new place of safety for young people and commit £4.3million on the redevelopment of our inpatient mental health facility.”
