Leading dermatologist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital recognised in prestigious medical list
A respected Birmingham Children’s Hospital dermatologist has been recognised in a landmark rundown of the brightest and most respected female doctors in the country.
Professor Celia Moss OBE is one of 80 experts included on the prestigious Medical Women’s Federation list published as part of the organisation’s centenary celebrations this year.
To mark the landmark the special publication profiles some of the UK’s top medics that are shaping the face of medicine today.
Professor Moss, who has worked at the leading paediatric hospital for more than 25 years has been acknowledged for her dedication to improving and pushing the boundaries of care and being at the forefront of treatment and innovation in paediatric dermatology.
Since joining the Children’s Hospital in 1990, she has been the driving force behind the now world-renowned dermatology team, which has been transformed from a part-time minor outreach of neighbouring adult services to a full-time specialist service that cares for thousands of children every year.
Her commitment and expertise in diagnosing and treating rare and complex genetic skin conditions has resulted in referrals from across the UK and beyond.
Key to the success of the service under the leadership of Professor Moss has been its pioneering work in bringing multiple specialists in one dedicated team; recognising that young people with skin conditions, such as eczema and the rare genetic skin fragility disease, epidermolysis bullosa, have other problems beyond their skin condition that require further physical and emotional support.
Her contributions to the field in her dedicated career have been previously recognised including being awarded as WellChild Doctor of the Year Award in 2011, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 by the Children’s Hospital, when she was also named as a Sunday Times Top Doctor.
Professor Moss was awarded an OBE in 2016 for her dedicated career of helping and improving the care of children and young people with skin conditions. She was awarded the prestigious honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours and was presented with her OBE by the Duke of Cambridge Prince William.

“I’m immensely fortunate to work with such a dedicated and skilled team, who puts the children we care for at the heart of everything it does. While I may have been included in the list, any success is down to the collective energies of everyone involved in our service.”
Internationally respected, Professor Moss has shared her knowledge through lectures and meetings across the globe, particularly helping colleagues in India, by providing training placements and mentorships.
