Mr Pete Bill's pioneering work in healthcare science recognised by His Majesty the King

mr Pete BillMr Pete Bill, Head of Neurophysiology at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust (BWC), has been awarded an MBE by His Majesty the King in recognition of his dedicated work in advancing the field of Neurophysiology and Healthcare Science.

With a career spanning more than two decades at the city’s specialist paediatric centre and nearly 30 years in the NHS, Mr Bill has created a lasting legacy.

As the current Head of Neurophysiology, he leads clinical and operational advancements.

Mr Bill’s clinical interests include pre-assessment for paediatric epilepsy surgery, with particular expertise in stereo electroencephalography, source imaging and the use of innovative techniques, such as non-invasive eloquent cortex mapping.

Driven by a commitment to improving clinical quality and patient outcomes, he has played a pivotal role in the development of a range of advanced neurophysiological services. His work has made a direct and life-changing impact on countless children, young people and their families.

Among his pioneering achievements is helping to develop a non-invasive brain mapping suite to identify functional areas of children’s brains to assist Neurosurgeons with complex epilepsy surgeries or brain tumour removals. This work has helped improve the quality of life of young people undergoing these major surgeries.

Mr Bill is a passionate advocate for the role of healthcare science in shaping the future of the NHS. He had proudly held the position of Regional Chief Scientific Officer for the Midlands for the past four years, championing innovation, excellence and workforce development across the region.

He has dedicated years of service to healthcare science and the Academy of Healthcare Science Awards (AHCS). He also played a pivotal role during the establishment of the academy itself and has been an active council member on the registration council for Physiological Science (RCCP). He successfully supported its merger with the AHCS register.

The Academy of Healthcare Science is the single overarching body for the entire UK Healthcare Science (HCS) workforce, working alongside the healthcare science professional bodies, as well as with professionals from the Life Science Industry and Clinical Research Practitioners, helping to strengthen the visibility of the contribution of those workforces.

A firm believer in developing talent, Mr Bill takes is committed to supporting individuals as they grow from trainees into clinicians and senior leaders and takes pride in championing the healthcare science profession.

Mr Pete Bill MBE said: "I was genuinely lost for words when I found out. It was a complete surprise and incredibly humbling. I feel truly honoured and deeply thankful.

"I’ve always been passionate about championing healthcare science and giving scientists the recognition they deserve. This isn’t just a personal honour. It’s a tribute to the entire service and the incredible work we do together."
