New artwork gives patients idea of what's to come
This is the impressive new artwork in our eye department which charts the journey of young patients through our care – aiming to put them and their loved ones at ea se.
The display , which also ha s detailed drawings of the eye and showcas es equipment used , has been put up on the walls of the waiting room for the service which is based in our Children's Hospital.
Laura Ramm, Specialist Orthoptist, explained how it will help those visiting the department : “Families and children can understandably feel nervous or worried about a hospital appointment, especially if it’s their first one so they’re not too sure what to expect.
“The new display will hugely help ease some of these worries by giving families the right information about some of the equipment we may use and why.
“We’ve had a hugely positive response so far from families and have said the artwork and details of the eye can provide a talking point and a chance for the children to engage with what’s going to happen.”
There are also drawings of the different uniforms staff wear so families will know more about their roles .
Alongside the artwork, the team also created a video which families can access before their appointments to help prepare them .
Laura added: “The video will allow families to start discussions at home about what to expect when they come to see the ophthalmology team.
"Then on arrival at the hospital, the new artwork can be used to build on those discussions whilst they wait to see our clinical team.
"Our aim is that there should be no surprises and newcomers will have an understanding of what might happen at and feel reassured about their hospital visit."
The artwork and video project have been generously funded via a patient wellbeing grant from the Roper Hall Eye Foundation .
