New Maternity app launches at Women’s Hospital

The service contains antenatal advice and education with nine hours' worth of content in different languages, including Arabic, Sorani Kurdish and Urdu and British Sign Language (BSL).

The Real Birth Company, which has been generously funded by our Charity and Neonatal Unit colleagues, aims to address health inequalities in maternity care and ensure that all women and families can receive high-quality care and information.

Kookie Salt, Consultant Midwife and Professional Midwifery Advocate, said: “We’re thrilled that The Real Birth Company is now live and has been such a huge success.

“Here at the Women’s Hospital, we see women and families from many different backgrounds and it’s so important we’re able to offer the same high standard of care, expertise and compassion to everyone.”

The app can provide education on labour and birth options and aims to help alleviate any anxieties surrounding pregnancy and birth.

There are a wide variety of topics, all available in different languages, including home births, perineal injuries, induction of labour and caesarean sections.

As well as nine different languages, the app also features adjustable font sizes, colours and backgrounds and audio guides with the aim of making it as accessible as possible.

Since being introduced earlier this year, the app has been downloaded by nearly 200 women and families.

Kookie added: “People from all across Birmingham have been accessing the app and we’ve had such positive feedback from women who are using the app in a non-English language.

“We really strive to make healthcare accessible and address any inequalities, so to be able to offer antenatal education for more women is something we’re really proud of.”
