New name for condition is welcomed

A woman sat at a deskA leading Consultant Gynaecologist has welcomed the international change to rename polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS).

Rima Dhillon-Smith, who is also a Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine at our Trust, said the new terminology more accurately reflected the condition and its impact on around one in eight women.

She explained: "The previous term has long been recognised as misleading, implying ovarian cysts while failing to capture the complex endocrine and metabolic dysfunction that underpins the condition and contributes to delayed diagnosis, fragmented care, and stigma.

"In my clinical work I care for both girls and women with this condition across different stages of their life. The existing terminology can be misleading, often suggesting a condition defined primarily by ovarian appearance or menstrual symptoms. In reality, what I see in practice is a complex, lifelong condition with significant metabolic, reproductive, and psychological implications.

"The proposed name change better reflects this broader clinical picture. It emphasises the metabolic aspects of the condition, which are frequently under-recognised but have important implications for long-term health, including risks related to insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, and overall wellbeing.

"I believe this shift in language will support clearer understanding among clinicians, patients, and families, and help move away from the perception that this is simply a “period-related” issue. It also reinforces the importance of early recognition and a more holistic, joined-up approach to care.

"I wholly support this change as an important step toward improving awareness, diagnosis, and long-term management for those affected."
