Today (Wednesday 16 October) is Restart a Heart Day, a day to raise awareness about cardiac arrest and to encourage people to learn life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which is used to restart the heart through compressions when a person is going into cardiac arrest.

During this week, our Resuscitation team have been holding workshops for colleagues at our Children’s and Women’s Hospitals as well as at Parkview.

The events have seen the team meeting with colleagues from across our Trust to help educate on the CPR resources available, from booklets to links to useful content as well as teaching sessions and hands-on practical training with specially designed baby, child and adult CPR manikins.

CPR training on a Brayden ManikinRachel Jefferson, Resuscitation Practitioner said: “The Restart a Heart event is here to help educate and support people learning CPR, as you never know when you might need to save a life.”

Amanda Harvey, an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) said: “The experience using the doll was amazing. It really helped me do my training and learn how to get the right depth to do CPR properly.”

There was also an opportunity to try a training assessment to get a registered CPR certification and a competition to see who could get the best score at performing the most successful CPR.

Fran Adams, Junior Sister Ward 17 said: “I think this is a really good learning opportunity for all staff across our Trust to have a practice and get some hands-on experience.”

Anyone can learn CPR and often, the faster you act, the better chance of survival for the patient. Depending on the age of the patient, there are different techniques of CPR that should be performed. It is recommended that you call the emergency services immediately if you suspect someone is going into cardiac arrest and they will talk you through basic life-saving instructions including advice about CPR.
