Pioneering miscarriage research gains Government approval

Miscarriage research carried out by clinicians at our Women’s Hospital is set to improve care for women across the country following a national review.

The Government have released their Pregnancy Loss Review which recommends implementing a Graded Model of Care for women experiencing miscarriages. The proposal, which was recommended by the Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research which is based at our Women’s Hospital, means that women will now receive specialist care earlier in their pregnancy journey.

Currently, women must have three miscarriages before they qualify for care or pre-conception advice that could prevent the loss of another baby.

The new Graded Model of Care, which is being trialled at our hospital, means that mental health and bereavement support can also be accessed earlier.

Professor Arri Coomarasamy OBE, Consultant Gynaecologist at BWC and Director of the Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research, said: “There is no scientific logic behind waiting until a woman has had three miscarriages to provide care. We don’t wait for someone to have three heart attacks to take them seriously.

“The new care guidelines we’ve created and implemented in a pilot study at our Women’s Hospital show how we can practically provide best practice care which is backed by the latest research.

“It’s an extremely welcome development to see our care model recommended in the Pregnancy Loss Review and the potential of our work recognised by Government.”

The announcement comes just weeks after Health Minister Maria Caulfield MP, Olivia Blake MP and Tommy's Charity Ambassador, Myleene Klass, visited our Women's Hospital to hear how the research into miscarriage is supporting families across the country.

The visit included a tour of the Early Pregnancy Unit and an informal chat with families who have been directly supported by the team.
