Simulation Education Strategy launched at BWC

The Sim team at the launch event

The Sim team at the launch eventBirmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Trust (BWC) has recently released its strategy on simulation-based education.

The document sets out how the Trust will provide excellent and innovative simulation training to improve education, patient safety, workforce experience and outcomes, with the aim to become an international leader in this form of education.

Simulation-based education is one of the main components of health care education and is widely accepted as a method to expedite skills, engage with rare but impactful clinical scenarios and develop teamwork. It is advocated by NHS England as one of the most successful education enablers, equipping learners with hands-on experience of what they are expected to do, act upon, escalate and in some cases inform decision-making as a practitioner.

Helen Jarvis, Medical Lead for Simulation, said: “We aim to be pioneering in the delivery of simulation across our Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust services. We are extremely thankful for the engagement that we have received from all participants so far, throughout this fantastic journey.”

Emma Sang, Simulation Lead Nurse, said: “We are hugely proud to have delivered simulations which have supported multi-disciplinary teams across all three hospital sites, working together. This has led to fantastic sharing of expertise and knowledge and has brought teams together who may not have previously had the opportunity to meet. We have worked alongside our non-clinical teams, building teamwork and enhancing communication.”
