Take the time to talk and leave your loved ones certain of your organ donation wishes

Have the talk this organ donation week Like many others, we’ll be helping mark Organ Donation Week (Monday 20 – Sunday 26 September) and we're encouraging everyone to ‘have the talk’ with their friends and family to let them know of their organ donation wishes – just two minutes could save a life.

Did you know that organ donation is now an opt-out system? That means that all adults in the UK are considered to have agreed to be organ donors unless they record their decision not to donate or ‘opt-out.’ However, your choice can be overridden if the people close to you aren't aware of your choices. Whether it's at half-time when you're watching the big game, a discussion over dinner or during a walk in the park, do take the time to ensure your loved ones are clear.

More than 5,800 people are currently waiting for a transplant in the UK – 37 at our Children’s Hospital. Do take the time to have the chat about giving the Gift of Life. It could be the most important you ever have. Here are some top tips for having your discussion.

Be honest - Listen to what everyone has to say. Be open and understanding when talking to your loved ones.

Know your stuff - You can find all the information you need on the Organ Donation website. Get informed before having the conversation.

Talk faith - Faith plays a big part in how many of us feel about organ donation. Seek support and guidance. The website has some useful advice.

Use prompts - It's good to use prompts as a starting point. Organ donation has recently changed to an opt-out system. Use this to steer the conversation towards organ donation.

Give it a go - The best you can do is go for it! It's a quick conversation and it can end up saving a life.
