Taslima Choudhury, Sister on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at our Women’s Hospital was one of the first DAISY award winners of 2025.

Five people standing and smiling at the camera in front of a trolley decorated with DaisysTaslima was nominated by a family whose baby she cared for on the unit, after she went above and beyond to create a special book of memories for the family after a difficult stay on the unit.

The family said in their nomination: “Our beautiful daughter was born premature at 23 weeks and six days.

“We had been over at the NICU for four weeks and she had a very unstable and rough start to life, but was shown so much love from every nurse and doctor who cared for her. Unfortunately, we had to then take her to the Children's Hospital to have major surgery.

“We had some very touch and go moments between surgeries, during those times the one thing I thought of was how we hadn't really documented or made memories apart from mental images and photos.

“An amazing nurse had gone out of her way in her own time, to create a priceless book for us and our daughter. Documenting her journey, her personal attributes and body sizes like feet and head, it's the only item I would look for if the house was burning down.

“She made that for us without even knowing us or owning us anything.

“She is one of the kindest, most genuine, beautiful people inside and out. Taslima deserves more than she would ever expect in work and life. An incredible person, who is a shining star in the hardest part of our lives.”

Taslima was surprised on the unit and was presented with the award by Louisa Davidson, Associate Director of Nursing and Midwifery and Head of Midwifery. She received a certificate, ‘Healer’s Touch’ statue, a DAISY pin and cinnamon rolls for her colleagues.

She commented: “I was very shocked, I never expected it at all. I felt so blessed to be part of the team that made me the nurse I am today.

“I am merely just an example of so many of my colleagues, I really love my job, and this almost feels like a trophy reflecting that.

“I do feel proud of myself, I sometimes struggle with my confidence a lot and it’s made me feel like I can actually do this like I am a decent nurse.’
