NHSCSP Training in Cervical Cytology - Introductory Courses

Course description

The objective of the introductory course is to provide trainees employed in an NHS Cytology Department with theoretical and practical instruction in cervical cytology. The course is designed to prepare trainees to achieve the qualification of NHSCSP Diploma in Cervical Cytology.

Our introductory courses are of 4 weeks’ duration (120 hours). These 4 weeks do not always run continuously but are normally delivered within a 6-week period. Trainees must attend a Follow-on Course within one year.

A structured assessment system is used throughout the course to test the knowledge, understanding and skills of the student as the course progresses.

This course is offered in SurePath and ThinPrep Liquid Based Cytology.

Course requirements

  • Minimum qualifications for participants: Trainee cytoscreener – 4 GCSEs or equivalent. Trainee BMS – A levels or equivalent required for HPC approved degree course or HPC/IBMS approved degree
  • Trainee should attend the course during the first 6 months of employment and ideally have 6 weeks laboratory experience.
  • Registration for NHSCSP Diploma: Trainees must be registered for NHSCSP Diploma in Cervical Cytology with NHSCSP Training Office. Laboratory Training Officer must be registered with the NHSCSP Training Office as an Assessor.

NHSCSP Training in Cervical Cytology - Follow-on Courses

Course description

The aims of the follow-on course are to revise the topics taught on the introductory course, consolidate skills, identify problem areas and provide additional teaching.

Follow-on courses take place within 12 months of the introductory course. The course comprises 5 days (30 hours) of training. The course content, teaching methods and teaching materials complement those of the introductory course.

This course is offered in SurePath and ThinPrep Liquid Based Cytology.

Course requirements

  • Participants should have attended an Introductory Course for NHSCSP Diploma within previous 12 months and screened 2000-3000 LBC slides.

NHSCSP Training in Cervical Cytology - Pre-examination Courses

Course description

Our Pre-Exam Course is a 3-day course held on consecutive days.  Participants normally attend 4-8 weeks before the examination for which they are entered.

The aim of the course is to assist in the final preparation leading up to the Examination for the NHSCSP Training in Cervical Cytology.  The course includes revision and mock examinations in the written and screening components of the exam.

This course is offered in SurePath and ThinPrep Liquid Based Cytology.

Course requirements

  • Participants must have applied to sit the NHSCSP Training in Cervical Cytology Exam
  • Trainee Cytoscreener – at least 24 months in employment before taking the exam
  • Trainee BMS – at least 18 months in employment before taking the exam
  • Trainees must have completed portfolio and screened 5000 LBC slides prior to taking the exam

Gynaecological Cytology - Update Courses (including Update Courses for Pathologists/APs)

Course description

Our update courses aim to inform all grades of qualified staff working in the screening programme about developments in cervical cytology and the NHSCSP.  This mandatory training enables staff to meet their professional requirements for CPD.

These courses are continuously updated to reflect current developments in cytology and are offered in SurePath and ThinPrep Liquid Based Cytology.

  • Minimum requirement:  NHSCSP Training in Cervical Cytology or equivalent
  • Qualified cytology staff must attend 3 days update training every three years / one day per year
  • This course may be attended as part of a ‘return to work’ training programme following absence from cervical cytology for more than 6 months

Gynaecological Cytology - Preparation for Certificate of Higher Cervical Cytopathology Training (CHCCT) Courses

Course description

A 2-day course covering aspects of gynaecological cytopathology, designed to prepare trainees for taking the Certificate of Higher Cervical Cytopathology Training (CHCCT) exam.

It may be possible to attend the Training Centre for the 3 days following this course for Personal Revision of our Gynaecological Cytology Workshops (no teaching provided on these additional days - nominal fee applies).  Please enquire at the time of booking.

Aims of the course:

  • To provide an overview of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme
  • To provide lectures, workshops, multiheader and individual microscopy sessions in squamous and glandular cervical cytology

Non-Gynaecological Cytology - Preparation for FRCPath Part 2 Exam Courses

This is a comprehensive 5-day cytology course designed to prepare trainees for the Non-Gynaecological FRCPath Part 2 Examination.

Gynaecological Histopathology - for BMS undertaking RCPath/IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma (ASD) in Histopathology Reporting

Course description

This is a hands-on practical course designed for individuals undertaking training to report histopathology of the female genital tract. The emphasis is on morphology of the relevant areas identified by the curriculum. The course concentrates on practical and clinical aspects of gynaecological pathology reporting.

Teaching methods include lectures, multiheaded microscope sessions and slide workshops. There will be extensive opportunity for discussion of cases and revision of material. There will also be opportunities to debate and discuss local practice with the teachers and other course participants.

Histopathology - Preparation for FRCPath Part 2 Exam Courses

Course description

The Birmingham Histopathology Course is a comprehensive course lasting two working weeks and providing an overview of systemic histopathology. There are topic-based lectures and multiheader microscopy sessions on the pathology of individual systems.  There are also slide seminars in general pathology.

There is a mock exam that seeks to emulate the surgical, frozen section and macro sections of the FRCPath Part 2 examination followed by detailed feedback and an opportunity to discuss the “exam” cases with the tutor.

Gynaecological & Non-Gynaecological Cytology and Autopsy - Introductory Course for ST1s

Course description

This gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytology course is aimed at cellular pathology trainees of ST1 grade who have little exposure to cytology prior to the course.

This course provides an opportunity to understand some theoretical basis of diagnostic cytology with an opportunity to work at the multiheader microscope with the trainers. It also provides an introduction to the National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme and a familiarity with reporting and management in cervical cytology. The autopsy component will be interactive ‘tutorials’ covering some key areas of autopsy practice.

Autopsy Pathology for Stage C/D Trainees in Histopathology & Consultant Pathologists Practising Autopsies

Cervical Sample Takers - Initial Training Course

Course description

This 2-day, RCN accredited, course for trainee cervical sample takers (smear takers) provides an introduction to all aspects of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme.  It is suitable for registered nurses, doctors, nurse associates or physician associates currently working in general practice, reproductive and sexual health clinics or colposcopy clinics.

This course must be followed by a period of supervised practice and, on satisfactory completion of a training log, a certificate of competence in cervical cytology will be issued.

We also offer a ½-day initial training course specifically for Trainee GPs and qualified GPs wishing to take cervical samples.

Cervical Sample Takers - Update Course

Course description

This is a half-day update training course for experienced cervical liquid-based cytology sample takers (smear takers). The update includes sessions to discuss current changes in the NHSCSP and introduction of new policies with interactive quizzes and case studies.

This course provides the mandatory 3-yearly training required to maintain competency as a sample taker.

Basic Cytopathology, Histopathology & Colposcopy Course (in conjunction with BSCCP)

Course description

This course is designed to provide colposcopists with an opportunity to have hands-on experience in aspects of cellular pathology which have an impact on the practice of colposcopy. There are sessions with a multiheader microscope where you can look at cervical samples and cervical biopsies.  There will also be a discussion of MDT type cases and a virtual tour around the histology and cytology laboratories.  Attendance at these sessions can be counted towards logbook requirements.

Training Officers’ Meetings

Course description

These meetings are held twice a year for Training Officers associated with our Training Centre providing an opportunity to discuss training issues.  The meetings also include standardisation exercises to enable City and Guilds/NHSCSP Diploma Assessors to maintain their skills.
