Fertility Nurse Lizzie - “It was such a sense of achievement to receive my nurses pin”

Our Fertility Centre has been providing compassionate care for couples and individuals experiencing fertility challenges since 1980. We’re excited to be hosting our first face-to-face recruitment event of 2023 at Birmingham Women’s Hospital on Saturday 18 March, sharing all of the brilliant roles to be explored before choosing BWC. One role in particular that we’re looking forward to showcasing is our Fertility Centre nursing positions.   lizzie

We spoke with Lizzie Price, Fertility Nurse at our Women’s Hospital who wanted to share her feelings towards the nursing profession and how she was inspired to become a Fertility Nurse at BWC, to support our patients and families. Fertility Nurses are those who care for those who seek counselling or treatment for their reproductive health, offering compassionate care and support.

We asked Lizzie how she became a Fertility Nurse, she said: “I kind of fell into the role by chance really after finding the job description, there’s so many specialisms within nursing - I just really felt that this was something I could do and really enjoy the most. The inspiration for me came from my aunty and my mother. My aunty, she had MS and I very much enjoyed caring for her and realised that this was something I could share more widely. My mother recognised that in me and pushed me towards nursing which I’m very thankful for.”

Lizzie said: “There’s a lot involved in fertility nursing – the main thing being that you need to be compassionate and caring. You know, we see couples and individuals go through such a hard time. Not every fertility journey is clear cut which is why we’re here to support wherever we can. We’re here to guide them through treatment and help as best as we can.”

For nurses to qualify to work with us at our Women’s Hospital, they must receive their nurses ‘pin’, a registered ID number where they can be identified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a registered nurse. Achieving your nurse's pin is a significant milestone in the life of a newly qualified nurse.

Lizzie shared: “It was such a sense of achievement to receive my pin – you go to university, you work hard, learn so much and create so many friendships along the way. To actually be qualified and registered is so brilliant.”

We asked Lizzie for some final words on the nursing profession and how she has found her time at BWC so far.

She said: “It really is a lovely job, it can be emotionally challenging at times but it’s so very, very rewarding. Nursing generally is very rewarding – if you think you could support families in the same way that we do, then try!”
