Not just a midwife, but also an advocate for all women, in all situations – Dudu speaks

We revisit one of our brilliant International Day of the Midwife representatives, Dudu Nyathi our Fetal Monitoring Midwife who discusses how she was inspired by her midwife when she became pregnant early in her life.
She recalls:
“When I was pregnant, I had the fear of being judged because of my age, and I thought maybe I was too young so I became scared to see my midwife – I didn’t know what she’d say to me.
"But actually, she was very accommodating – very lovely, very friendly, and she was somebody I could look up to and that made me feel good about myself and it made me feel safe.”
“It made me think about how many people who would’ve been in the same situation to me, being scared of being judged for whatever reason so I thought, being in her position, I’d also be able to change people’s lives and make a difference.”
This is why - you’ve got to be a midwife at heart, you’ve got to want to care. You’ve got to want to change people’s lives and make a difference.”
Dudu’s words continue to inspire many of us; drawing upon her own experiences, her compassion and empathy has been built through her own experiences, worries and hardships that have shaped her to be a better carer and advocate for all women, in all situations.
