Spotlight on staff as dozens recognised for outstanding care
The spotlight was on staff at our Trust as their outstanding care was recognised in our annual awards.
In a dazzling Bollywood themed ceremony, the BWC Spirit Awards highlighted stories where the workforce had delivered care to children, women and their families, with unwavering compassion.
More than 900 nominations were received for 14 categories which included Outstanding Clinical Team, Most Inspiring Colleague, Charity Champion and the Research, Innovation and Quality Improvement prize.
The winners work at Birmingham Children's Hospital and Birmingham Women's Hospital, which are run by the Trust.
Chief Executive Matt Boazman reflected: “I’d like to congratulate every nominee, finalist and winner.
“They are the embodiment of our Trust values of ambition, bravery and compassion through their actions at work – and this ceremony highlights what they do, recognising their achievements and dedication.
“It’s been a huge honour to meet all our finalists and hear their amazing stories. It was a source of such immense pride in our organisation and in our people.”
The event was funded by sponsors, Birmingham City University and ProAct, as well as the charities for both hospitals.
BBC Radio WM presenter Ed James brought charm and energy as the host and Hit the Dhol, a Punjabi-themed music and dance troop, provided unforgettable entertainment to around 250 guests at the Edgbaston Stadium.
Among the many inspiring stories, the Rainbow Clinic at the Women’s Hospital was honoured with the prestigious Moment of Magic Award, voted for by patients and the public.
The team were nominated by mum Eve Sleigh who had come under the care of the service when she found out she was expecting again, following a tragic stillbirth.
The Rainbow Clinic is a service for women who have experienced baby loss or miscarriage and need further medical support. Their care led to the birth of Eve's second child Kiyaan.
Two outstanding Lifetime Achievement winners were also highlighted after serving a combined 85 years. Linda Monk, a Nursery Nurse at the Women’s Hospital and Di Thomson, who recently retired as a nurse and is currently a volunteer at the Children’s Hospital were commended for their dedication to the NHS over the years.
Meanwhile, the Research, Innovation and Quality Improvement gong went to the 24 Hour Birth Partner Project from the Women’s Hospital, whilst the Unsung Hero accolade recognised Lisa Perrett, Family Support Worker at the Children’s Hospital.
Mark Brider, CEO of Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital Charities, said: "It’s always such an honour to sponsor the Spirit Awards. The event recognises the many remarkable individuals across our Trust who provide outstanding care and compassion and it’s their unwavering commitment to excellence which continually inspires us at the charity, as well as our supporters, to do everything we can to help our hospitals remain world-class.”
