Volunteers at Birmingham Women's Hospital smiling

Become a volunteer

Whether you would like to give something back, make new friends, enhance your existing skills or learn something about a career in the NHS, there are so many benefits to volunteering with us.

Coming into hospital can be a stressful and worrying time, and having people around who can offer support, read stories to children, show families around or greet them at the door can make a huge difference to their journey and experience with us.

Our volunteer service is integral to providing an outstanding patient experience in our world-leading hospitals, through enhancing the lives of patients, staff and communities. We welcome confident, friendly independent volunteers from age 16 with good communication skills.

We provide a friendly, welcoming environment, full training, travel expenses, social events and regular newsletters. You provide the personality, passion, character and fun.

Start with our roles page, to determine which programme and role would suit you best and apply today. Please note, if you are interested in arranging shadowing or work experience placements, you should contact our Aspire programme or the relevant department directly.

Temporary halt of volunteering applications

You will be aware that the Government has issued guidance regarding Coronavirus and that the NHS is working hard to reduce the virus’s impact within hospitals and care settings. This has meant we have had to make the difficult decision to temporarily pause receiving applications from individuals interested in wanting to volunteer with us.

Our website will be updated as and when it is safe for us to recruit new volunteers and we hope that you will apply to join us and help make a difference to our services.
