Tumour Registry
The West Midlands Regional Children’s Tumour Registry is part of the Oncology department. We collect patient data and study patterns of childhood cancer in the region, using information going back to 1957, to give us a better understanding of what causes the disease and how it changes over time. The Tumour Registry is a specialist paediatric cancer registry and shares patient information with the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service, which is part of NHS England.
Publications
We have published many papers in medical journals and given presentations at local, national and international conferences. We work very closely with scientific colleagues at the University of Birmingham Institute, looking at the molecular biology, or genetics, of the disease. Survival rates of childhood cancers have improved dramatically over the last 30 years and we are now researching into the long-term effects of the disease and its treatment, which will benefit present and long-term future patients.
Funding
The Tumour Registry has been funded largely from public donations and was set up in 1984 by Professor Jill Mann, making it the first dedicated Research Unit in the Trust. If you want to help us continue our vital work in studying cancer in children, please contact the Fundraising Department and ask them for details.
