Learn about Professional Midwifery Advocacy at BWC
Our BWC Professional Midwifery Advocates are available to support midwives across all bands, departments, and specialisms. All band 5 midwives have a dedicated PMA, who offers restorative clinical support, professional and personal advice, and career development guidance. By providing a personalized approach to caring for our colleagues, we aim to reduce burnout and empower midwives to focus on their strengths.
Our PMAs are essentially midwives with a greater degree of training, adjusted to nurture and aid our midwives. They offer a safe and open space to talk through problems and work through challenges, using appreciative inquiry. They work alongside clinical educators to provide professional and clinical assistance, and they are available to support midwives at all stages of their careers.
We welcome new starters and those going into new senior roles to our program, but professional advocacy is open to all midwives. As Gemma Price, one of our Professional Midwifery Advocates, said, “Our midwives aren’t just cogs in a machine, they’re people, and we value their immense dedication to supporting women and the wider healthcare system.”
PMAs can be referred to our midwives or they can request advocacy through self-referral. PMAs are essentially midwives with a greater degree of training, adjusted to nurture and aid our midwives. They understand that the role is incredibly rewarding but it can also be incredibly taxing for colleagues.
