Support for Black, Indigenous, People of Colour or anyone from an ethnically marginalised group
Several studies have found that for almost all ethnic minority groups, health-related quality of life is worse compared to white British people. Not only are people from these groups often more likely to suffer from underlying health conditions, but they are also more likely to report worse treatment when visiting their GP, medical centres and insufficient support from local services. Our aim at BWC is to aid in reducing health inequalities for all marginalised groups. If you are part of these groups, you can find support links and helpful resources below.
BAATN is the home of the largest community of Counsellors and Psychotherapists of Black, African, Asian and Caribbean Heritage in the UK. Their primary focus and area of expertise is to support people from these heritages. However, are open to other People of Colour who are affected by oppression due to the colour of their skin or global discrimination.
Birmingham Asian Resource Centre is a front-line community-based, not-for-profit organisation. The Centre serves the needs of the local communities through the use of their own mother tongues, with a deep understanding of the religious, cultural and national aspirations of the people it serves. It provides resources and practical help, with a coherent policy of anti-racism, anti-sexism and non-discriminatory practices.
Black Minds Matter UK is a fully registered charity operating in the UK; connecting Black individuals and families with free mental health services by professional Black therapists to support their mental health. Our vision is to make mental health topics more relevant and accessible for all Black people in the U.K., removing the stigma and remodelling the services to be relevant for the Black community.
Friends, Families and Travellers Working Towards Equality aim to end racism and discrimination against Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people and to protect the right to pursue a nomadic way of life. We support individuals and families with the issues that matter most to them. We believe everyone should receive the support, care and treatment they need, with the compassion, respect and dignity they deserve.
Muslim Women's Network UK (MWNUK) is the only national Muslim women's organisation in Britain. They are a small national charity that works to improve social justice and equality for Muslim women and girls. Some of the support offered includes - a helpline, counselling services, advocacy, Role Models Project and international linking to other initiatives.
The Muslim Community Helpline is a national organisation for women, men, youth and children. The Helpline is a confidential, non-judgemental listening and emotional support service.
Sandwell African Caribbean Mental Health Foundation (SACMHF) commenced life as an informal drop-in service for Black people who were affected by mental ill health in 1994. SACMHF continues to operate today from the Kuumba Centre and now delivers various culturally responsive mental health services for the Black and wider community in Sandwell and West Birmingham.
